Her father owns fourteen John Deere dealerships, 5,000 acres of row crop land, 5,000 acres of forest land, and J.C. Howard Farms, Inc., a pork production company with 27,000 pigs. In Lenoir County, Howard’s great-grandfather and grandfather were also tobacco farmers.

Howard was co-owner of Chef & the Farmer and the Vivian Howard Restaurant Group, and she was married to artist Ben Knight. She verified the couple’s divorce at the beginning of 2023. The couple met while working together at Voyage restaurant in NYC. They resided in Deep Run, North Carolina, on Howard’s family homestead alongside their twins, Theodore and Florence.
