A College Success Course Will

College Success is a thorough three-credit course that aims to improve students’ academic performance by assisting them in recognizing obstacles that stand in the way of the pursuit of their academic, personal, and/or professional objectives. Students investigate the seven non-cognitive competencies—self-advocacy, confidence, emotional intelligence, resilience, perseverance, self-control, and growth mindset—using guided, reflective journaling as a self-discovery technique.

Furthermore, College Success provides the chance to acquire cognitive skills (study methods) founded on learning and thinking ideas, which students are urged to include and utilize to become motivated, efficient, and capable learners. There is much to gain from this course, regardless of whether you are a transfer student at PSU, new to college, or just in need of a motivational boost.

Two credits in COLL 1100, “College Success”

This performance-based course has two parts: (1) acquainting students with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; (2) increasing student success in college through the development of self-worth, personal accountability, self-motivation, resource management, study skills, and academic and career planning.

COLL 1110: Accomplishment on the Worldwide Stage 1 Credits

This course, which is part of the SSCC Study Abroad Program, is lab-based. In addition to teaching students how to travel overseas, including how to get a passport, pack appropriately, and navigate unfamiliar cities, the course will also provide them hands-on experience seeing historical sites, participating in local cultural events, and interacting with locals in the host countries.

Two distinct courses are available from the Learning Resource Center to help students succeed in college. LC 112 was designed to teach our first-semester students success techniques and positive habits for their transition to college. For students who struggle academically or find it difficult to acclimate to the demands of college coursework, LC 113 was developed. Students can get credit toward graduation for both courses.

LC 112: Achieving Success in College and Beyond (3 credits)

Encouraging students to create and promote their success during their first semester at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College is the goal of LC 112: College Success and Beyond. The goal of the course is to assist students in acclimating to college life, self-evaluating and learning how to make the best decisions for themselves, looking at opportunities for personal development, and adopting the attitudes and behaviors that will eventually help them maintain good academic standing at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

A person’s classification into LC 112 is determined by any mix of the following:

  • SAT/ACT Results
  • Scores for Accuplacer
  • GPA in high school
  • GPA transfer

Regaining College Success, LC 113 (0–1 credit hour)

  • Status of academic probation (semester or cumulative GPA less than 2.0)
  • Student-athlete with a GPA of less than 2.5 during the semester
  • Scholar from the 21st century/Pomeroy who does not meet the GPA requirements specified by the scholarship expectations.
